Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: Matthew 2:1-12

The magi arrived in Jerusalem and went straight to the king and asked him about the new born king. In Luke’s Gospel the angel appeared to the shepherds and told them about the child and they went straight to the manger and found the child as the angel had told them.

The magi who study the signs and stars follow their learning. They are not simple enough like the shepherds to find the new born king in a simple place. They arrive and go straight to the king. They are controlled by their learning and culture that they could not see the king out the context of the palace.

(இடையர்களுக்கு வானதூதர்கள் வழியாக@ ஞானிகளுக்கு மறைநூல் வழியாக).

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 2: 1-11

Mary attends the function. She also takes a role which indicates that she was closer to the family. She feels with their situation and she wanted to do something to alleviate the difficult situation. She does not show herself to be a mere guest or an invitee but rather she presents herself to be belonging to the family. Her insistence that Jesus should to something for them again shows her closeness.

This is the first sign that Jesus does in his public ministry. The author does not present Jesus as doing some in religious function or a temple-related function or a law-related situation. He is presented as upholding a family or keeping up the honour and prestige of the family in a difficult situation. Family is the basis for every other situation.

மரியாவும் திருமணத்தில் கலந்துகொள்வது மட்டும் அல்ல மாறாக பங்கேற்கிறாள். அந்த குடும்பத்தோடு ஒன்றாகிவிடுகிறாள். அந்த குடும்பச் சூழல் மரியாவையும் பாதிக்கிறது. இயேசுவும் தனது முதல் அரும்அடையாளத்தை நிறைவேற்றுகிறார். அவருடைய செயல் மதம் சார்ந்த அல்லது சட்டம் சார்ந்த ஒரு செயல் அல்ல. அது ஒரு குடும்பம் சார்ந்த செயல். மரியா குடும்ப உறவை முன் வைக்கிறார். இயேசு குடும்ப மகிழ்வை முன் வைக்கிறார்.
