Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 8:18-22

“Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.”

Being a disciple of Jesus is not the choice of the follower; rather it is the choice of Jesus himself. A scribe wanted to be a disciple of Jesus and expressed his willingness to go to any extent to be his disciple but Jesus discouraged him saying that it would be difficult for him to a disciple of Jesus. Jesus reveals his own situation (son of man has nowhere to lay his head) and through that he tells the scribe that it would be difficult for him to be a disciple.

Another one wanted to be a disciple but a little later. He wanted to finish filial responsibility towards his father before following him. But Jesus told him not to be bothered about those responsibilities (though they are important) because works for the kingdom takes precedence. Jesus wants him to be his disciple. So it is Jesus who decides about disciples.

இயேசுவின் சீடராய் இருப்பது இயேசுவின் தேர்வுதான் பின்பற்றுவோரின் தேர்வு அல்ல. மறைநூல் அறிஞர் பின்பற்ற விழைகிறார் ஆனால் இயேசு அவரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள மனமில்லாதவர்போல துன்பங்களை முன்வைக்கிறார். பின்பற்றவிரும்பும் மற்றொருவர் காலம் தாழ்த்த விழைகிறார் ஆனால் இயேசு அவரை உடனே பின்தொடர அழைக்கிறார். அழைப்பது இயேசுதான்; நம் விருப்பம் அல்ல.

GOSPEL READING: MARK 5:21-43

“Do not be afraid; just have faith.”

Jairus, the synagogue official came to Jesus and asked him to come and heal her daughter because she was at the point of death. Surely he had faith in God and in Jesus and that was why he came and pleaded. (Faith was not expressed openly at this point). The woman afflicted with haemorrhages for twelve years had faith in Jesus and that is the reason she came and touched his clothes. (Faith was not expressed openly at this point).

Jesus recognized the faith of these two people though they did not express it openly and directly. Jesus recognized the faith and that is why he told the woman: “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.” In the same way Jesus recognized the faith of Jairus and Jesus was aware that the news that was brought about his daughter was making him worry and hence Jesus said: “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” Faith is what matters.

‘அஞ்சாதீர், நம்பிக்கையை மட்டும் விடாதீர்”

குணமளிக்கும் புதுமைகளுக்கு நம்பிக்கை அடித்தளமாக இருக்கிறது. நம்பிக்கை வெளிப்படையாக வெளிப்படத்தப்படவில்லை. அவர்களின் மனதில் இருந்த நம்பிக்கையை இயேசு இனம்கண்டு கொள்கிறார். ஆகவேதான் அவர் சொல்லுகிறார் அந்த பெண்ணிடம்;: ‘மகளே, உனது நம்பிக்கை உன்னைக் குணமாக்கிற்று. அமைதியுடன் போ. நீ நோய் நீங்கி நலமாயிரு” என்று. அதேபோல் தொழுகைக்கூடத் தலைவரான யாயிர் என்பவரிடம் இயேசு கூறுகிறார்: ‘அஞ்சாதீர், நம்பிக்கையை மட்டும் விடாதீர்”. நம்பிக்கையே எல்லாம்.
