Jesus’ practical reasoning
Jesus now returns to Capernaum for the last time, as he is about to begin his significant journey to Jerusalem. The collectors of the temple tax naturally seek to collect it from Jesus in his hometown. They instinctively ask Peter for his Master’s decision. Without reflecting, the impetuous spokesman answers ‘yes’; after all, Jesus is the one who fulfills the law. When Peter came home, Jesus poses him a parabolic problem to bring about an attitudinal change by drawing a conclusion, “the sons are free”. The unspoken sons of God’s kingdom are Jesus, the Son and his brothers who do God’s will (12,49-50), who are the sons of the Father (5,45), and sons of the Kingdom (13,38). Freedom is the hallmark of these sons: freedom from the temple tax, and therefore in principle, freedom from the temple and from the law which imposed the tax. From a theoretical vantage point, the question of the collectors should have received a negative answer, of not paying tax. But Jesus is interested in offering a practical solution with totally different reasoning. Even though the sons are free from tax, they are obliged to avoid unnecessary scandal. Jesus confirms to Peter’s ‘yes’ only from this point of view. He then expresses the true Son’s faith in the Father’s loving care by ordering Peter to obtain the necessary money for both from fishing.
எருசலேம் நோக்கிய தனது தீவிரப் பயணத்தை தொடங்கவிருக்கும் நிலையில், இயேசு இறுதி முறையாக கப்பர்நகூமுக்குத் திரும்புகிறார். ஆலய வரி வசூலிப்பவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம் அதைப் பெற்றுக் கொள்ள அவரது சொந்த ஊரில் முயற்சிக்கிறார்கள். உடனே இயேசுவின் தொடர்பாளரான பேதுருவிடம் அவருடைய தலைவரின் முடிவைக் கேட்கிறார்கள். இயேசு சட்டங்களை நிறைவு செய்பவர் என்ற உள்ளுணர்வின் தூண்டுதலால் அவர் “ஆம்” என்று பதிலளிக்கிறார். பேதுரு வீட்டிற்கு வந்தவுடன், அவருடைய எண்ணங்களில் மாற்றத்தைக் கொணர இயேசு அவரிடம் ஒரு சவாலான கேள்வியை முன்வைக்கிறார். அதற்கு இயேசுவே, “குடிமகன்கள் சட்டங்களுக்கு கட்டுப்பட்டவரல்ல” என்று பதிலளிக்கிறார். யார் இந்த கடவுளின் இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்பட்ட மற்றும் பேசப்படாத குடிமகன்கள் என்றால்: கடவுளின் மகனான இயேசு, இறைத் திருவுளத்தை நிறைவேற்றும் அவரது சகோதரர்கள், விண்ணகத் தந்தையின் மக்கள், மற்றும் கடவுளின் ஆட்சிக்குட்பட்டவர்கள். இந்த உரிமைக் குடிமகன்களுக்கு விடுதலை என்பது தனிச்சிறப்பாகும். இதனால் கோவில் வரியில் சலுகை இருந்தது. அதாவது கொள்கையளவில் கோவிலிலிருந்தும், சட்டங்களிலிருந்தும் விடுதலை கிடைத்தது. எனவே, வெறும் ஏட்டளவில் வரி வசூலிப்பவரின் கேள்விக்கு “வரி செலுத்தத் தேவையில்லை” என்ற எதிர்மறையான பதிலை அவர்கள் பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும். ஆனால் முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்ட பகுத்தறிவுடன் கூடிய பதிலைத் தர இயேசு ஆர்வமாக இருந்தார். குடிமகன்கள் வரி விலக்கு பெற்றிருந்தாலும், தேவையற்ற இகழ்ச்சியினை தவிர்க்க அவர்கள் கடமைப்பட்டுள்ளனர் என்பதை தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார். பேதுருவின் “ஆம்” என்ற பதில், இந்த கண்ணோட்டத்தில் மட்டுமே அர்த்தம் பெறும் என்பதை இயேசு உறுதிப்படுத்துகிறார். பின்னர் அவர்கள் இருவரின் வரிப்பணத்தை மீன் பிடித்து செலுத்த பேதுருவிற்கு கட்டளையிடுகிறார். இது தந்தையின் அன்பான பராமரிப்பில் உண்மையான மகன் கொண்டிருக்கும் நம்பிக்கையை வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றது.
