Love precedes Law
Jesus grieves over the Pharisees for their tithing practices. Tithing was commanded in the law (Lev 27,30; Deu 14,22). It was meant to be a joyful offering, but the inclusion of all stalks of garden herbs made a burdensome mockery. Jesus specifies two herbs, mint and rue, an evergreen aromatic plant used for seasoning, which were specifically exempt from being tithed in Mishnah. Requesting to pay tithes for minutiae brought public recognition and self-satisfaction for the Pharisees. Their excessive scrupulosity causes them to neglect what really matters: justice and love of God. These two activities echo Mic 6,8, “to do justice” and Lk 10,27 that recall Jesus’ summary of the law, “love the Lord”. Neither loving God nor doing justice can be limited to ten percent but requires one’s heart, soul, strength, and mind. Jesus does not dismiss the commitment to render a portion of one’s possessions back to God, but one cannot replace the other. Without justice and love, their quest for honour and recognition is groundless.
பரிசேயர்களின் தசமபாகம் செயல்களுக்காக இயேசு வருத்தப்படுகின்றார். பத்தில் ஒரு பாகம் செலுத்துவது கட்டளையாகவே சட்டத்தில் (லேவி 27,30; இணை 14,22) குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. இவ்வாறு செலுத்துதல் மகிழ்ச்சியான செயலாக இருக்க வேண்டும். மாறாக, எல்லா கீரைச் செடிகள் மூலிகைகளுக்கும் தசமபாகம் செலுத்துவது ஒரு கேலிக்கூத்தாக அமைந்து விடுகிறது. இயேசு புதினா மற்றும் கறியிலை ஆகிய சுவையூட்டலுக்குப் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் நறுமணச் செடிகளுக்கு கட்ட வேண்டிய தசமபாகம் பற்றி குறிப்பிடுகின்றார். சட்டங்களின் விரிவாக்க நூலான மிஷ்னாவில் இவற்றிக்கு விலக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. சிறு சிறு காரியங்களுக்கு தசமபாகம் செலுத்தக் கோருவது பரிசேயர்களுக்கு பொது அங்கீகாரத்தையும் சுய திருப்தியையும் அளித்தது. எனவே சிறிய காரியங்களில் அக்கறை செலுத்தி முக்கியமானவற்றை அவர்கள் புறக்கணித்தனர், அதாவது நீதி மற்றும் கடவுளின் அன்பு. இந்த இரண்டு செயல்களும் மீக்கா 6,8 மற்றும் லூக்கா 10,27ல் எதிரொலிக்கின்றன. கடவுளை நேசிப்பதும் நீதியைச் செயல்படுத்துவதும் பத்து சதவிகிதமாக வரையறுக்கப்படவில்லை; ஆனால் ஒருவரின் முழுமையான ஈடுபாட்டை, அதாவது இதயம், ஆன்மா, வலிமை, மற்றும் மனம் இவற்றை உள்ளடக்கியது. ஒருவரின் உடைமைகளில் பத்தில் ஒரு பகுதியை கடவுளிடம் திருப்பித் தரும் கட்டளையை இயேசு நிராகரிக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் தசமபாகத்திற்காக நீதியையும் அன்பையும் முன்னுரிமை படுத்தாமல் விட்டுவிடக் கூடாது. நீதி மற்றும் அன்பு இல்லாமல் பரிசேயர்கள் தங்களின் மரியாதை மற்றும் அங்கீகாரத்தை தேடுவது ஆதாரமற்றது.
