GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 5:1-11

This is the sermon that Jesus makes at the beginning of his ministry. He is the preacher and the place of preaching is on the mountain and the listeners are his disciples (followers). Mountain was the place where God revealed his covenant to Moses and to the Israelites. Here Jesus reveals the new code of the covenant to the new Israel.

This also shows who are ones that are to be accounted truly happy, and what their characters are and secondly what that is wherein true happiness consists, in the promises made to persons of certain characters, the performance of which will make them happy. Happiness is found or given to certain characters and the happiness lies in certain ways behaviour.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 7:11-17

Jesus does not want to see people weeping. But he himself was weeping at the tomb of Lazarus. Death always made people weep (All were weeping and mourning for her, when he said, “Do not weep any longer, for she is not dead, but sleeping.”- Lk 8:52; and “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children – Lk 23:28).

This statement of Jesus shows his compassion for the widow. Widow is one of those who were to be cared for by the society. But this particular woman had also lost her only son. This only goes to show that he had no husband (past) and no son (future) and at present she needed only compassion from the others. Jesus showed this by giving her the future.
