GOSPEL READING: LUKE 2:22-35

Anyone who believes in the Bible and has a faith based on the Word of God found in the bible knows well that everything in the universe was created by God (All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be). Since everything came from God and since everything belongs to God, it was the belief of the biblical people that everything should go back to God.

This was not only at the end of times but also during their existence, here on earth, everything belongs to God and they should be offered to God. This belief was the basis of the theory of sacrifice o God. They also offered substitutive sacrifices to preserve certain things or let certain things to continue to exist.

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 2:13-18

The author of the gospel of Matthew is trying to present Jesus as a new Israel. He is depicting Jesus as an individual going through all the experiences of the people of Israel. The descendants of Abraham became a nation or formed themselves to be a nation in Egypt. They were there as slaves or as foreigners in a strange land. Jesus also goes through that Experience.

Later Jesus goes through forty days of desert experience to re-live those forty years of the people of Israel. Baptism of Jesus also makes him realize that he is the son of God. Adding everything together Jesus becomes a new Israel. (in a sense having the experience of Egypt, desert experience and the experience of God as the Father etc.)
