GOSPEL READING: LUKE 14:25-33

In the same way, every one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.

Great crowds were travelling with Jesus. They were not following him. They were travelling with him or along with him. They have seen many miracles they have heard him giving heart probing sermons and he was in fact out of the ordinary for the crowds. They liked him and they wanted to see more of these.

Jesus wanted them to be his followers. He did not want them to be just co-travellers. He wanted them to be followers. He also gave them criteria for being followers. They have to prefer him (Jesus) to his parents and relatives. Each one has to carry his or her own cross (no letting someone to carry the cross) and he or she has plan his goals in life and ready to renounce everything for the sake of his goal.

05.11.2013 INVITED

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 14:15-24

None of those men who were invited will taste my dinner.

Jesus has been going around Galilee summoning people to God’s great supper. The time has arrived. Those who were invited long ago must hurry up and come. Most of the have refused giving excuses. Some are delighted to be included and they are the poor and the sinners. This could be one meaning.

There is another meaning to this parable and in this meaning the expected guests are the Jews. They were waiting for the arrival of the kingdom. But when the kingdom was among them they were giving excuses. Those who accepted at the time of Luke were the early Christians.
