GOSPEL READING: LUKE 14:12-14

When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind

The message of Jesus is quite strange and out form the ordinary. Meal is a time when friends and relatives come together to share and strengthen their relationship and friendship. Often meal is a sign for the others about the host’s popularity among the people of the locality. Invitations will further be strengthened by the invitation of the other.

Jesus says that invitations should be repaid by the invitees. Meals should be with the poor and the orphans and the sick so that the reward is that the poor are only helped. Certainly this is not the way the secular world will do. Jesus is presenting the kingdom where the earthly rewards are not important.

Zacchaeus fits into the themes of Luke in writing the Gospel. One was the problem of riches and what to do about. The second is to identify Jesus with the sinners and the third one is to recognize Jesus as the Lord in faith and thus achieve the new life that Jesus has brought into this world. Zacchaeus becomes the little model hero in the story of Jesus.

Zacchaeus gives evidence of extravagant repentance. Repentance here isn’t just a change of heart; as in Judaism in general, repentance involves restoration, making amends. When Zacchaeus has given half of his property to the poor and a fourfold restoration he would find himself in a reduced situation. I have to stay at your house has become ‘salvation has come to this house’. Where Jesus is there salvation will be.
