Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 23:13-22

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.

The scribes and Pharisees were hypocrites; that is it in which all the rest of their bad characters are summed up. A hypocrite is a stage-player in religion (that is the primary signification of the word); he acts the part of one that he neither is nor may be, or perhaps the he neither is nor would be.

They are hypocrites because while they live, their religion is vain; when they die, their ruin is great. They are blind guides because they fall into the pit and they make those who follow them also fall in the pit. They guide the people to the wrong ends. They do not lead the people to the temple but to the gold; they do not guide the people to the altar but to the gifts.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 13:22-30

And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God.

The question about how many will be saved is not answered directly by Jesus. He does not give statistics and figures to satisfy human inquisitiveness. He gives a stern warning. He is going about his mission of bringing in the kingdom. He has let the door of the kingdom open for entry. But one day the door will be shut.

The Jews were against the Gentiles and they were sure that the Gentiles would not be saved. To them Jesus said that the people from east and west and north and south would enter the kingdom before them. There is no automatic privilege for anyone. All are under the grace of God.
