Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 20:24-29

I will not believe.

Thomas refuses to believe in the resurrection of Jesus. He also refuses to accept the witnesses of the other disciples. He stands alone in front of the rest of the disciples. He also formulates conditions to believe in Jesus. This is very strange especially from a disciple who had lived with him for three years and seen all the miracles and heard all his teaching and preaching.

Jesus comes down in this case and allows himself to be seen by the disciple (Thomas). He allows himself to be as Thomas wants. Jesus lets himself to be according to the desire of the disciple. But he warns him that he will not be doing so with everyone who requests a revelation. Those who believe in Jesus without any requests and demands are blessed.

நான் நம்பமாட்டேன்.

தோமா இயேசுவோடு பல ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்தும் அவருடைய போதனைகளை கேட்டும் அவர் செய்யும் புதுமைகளை கண்டும்; அவரைப்பற்றிய சாட்சியங்களை கேட்டும் நம்பவில்லை. தனக்கு நடந்தால் ஒழிய நம்ப முடியாது என்று இருக்கிறார் தோமா. (இதுபோல் நாமும் இருக்கிறோம்). தனக்கு புதுமைகள் நடக்காத போதும் தான் விரும்பியது நடக்காத போதும் நம்புவதே சிறந்தது.

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 8:23-27

Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea,

The Jews were not seafaring people. They were originally shepherds and later they concentrated on the land. The sea remained a place and power of evil and darkness. It was a symbol of wild and untameable power. The disobedient prophet Jonah was made to retrace his path by the wild power of the sea.

God created the beautiful world by subduing the wild sea (And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters Gen 1:2). Yahweh tamed the sea at Exodus. He let the people of Israel through the Red Sea (another creation of a new people). Here Jesus has power over the wind and sea. Jesus is creating a new Israel.

திடீரெனக் கடலில் பெருங்கொந்தளிப்பு ஏற்பட்டது.

இஸ்ராயேல் மக்கள் மனதில் கடல் தீமையின் ஒரு அடையாளமாக இருந்து வந்தது. கடலிலிருந்து அழகான உலகை கடவுள் படைத்தார். செங்கடலை அடக்கி இஸ்ராயேலை படைத்தார். இயேசு இங்கு புது இஸ்ராயேலை படைக்கிறார்: கடல்மீது (தீமைமீது) தான் கொண்ட அதிகாரத்தால்.
