GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 5:43-48

Do not the pagans do the same?

Christianity is something more than humanity. Human tendency and natural inclination is to love those who love us. This is done by everyone and everywhere. There is nothing meritorious about this. The Jews hated the publicans and even they were better examples of love of their friends and neighbours.

Christianity poses a series of questions with regard to our life. We are Christians today because God has done more to us. We have received more grace from God and the glory of God is turned more to us than to others. What do we do more than others? What excelling thing do we do? What is the distinctive action of ours that show that we are Christians? Everyone in the world returns good for good. Christians should render good for evil. It is the duty of Christians to desire, and aim at, and press toward perfection in grace and holiness.

கிறிஸ்துவம் மனிதத்தை மிஞ்சவேண்டும். பொதுவாக மனிதர்கள் தங்கள் நண்பர்களை, உறவினர்களை அன்பு செய்கிறார்கள். கிறிஸ்தவனின் அறவாழ்வு தந்தையாம் கடவுளைப்போல் இருக்க வேண்டும். தீமைக்கு, தீமையில் நன்மை விளைவிப்பது கடவுள் தன்மை. கிறிஸ்தவன் அவ்வாறு இருக்க வேண்டும்.

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 16:13-19

I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus had come to establish the kingdom of God upon the earth. Only he could do it because he was from the heaven and he had the power to do it. Now he is delegating this power pertaining to the kingdom to the church here on earth. This power had nothing to do with earthly realities (civil, secular power) because his kingdom was not of this world.

The keys allude to the custom of investing men with authority over a place by delivering the keys of that place. It is like the master, when he goes on a journey, gives the keys to the steward giving him also the authority to look after the household and the rest of it. This could also allude to the custom of the Jews in creating a doctor of the law which was to put into his hand the keys of the box where the book of the law was kept. He had the authority to open and close the box where the word of God was kept and also to bind up and loosen the scroll to read it and preach on it.

இயேசு விண்ணரசை நிறுவ வந்தார். அவர் ஒருவருக்குத்தான் விண்ணரசைப் பற்றித்தெறியும், அவர் ஒருவர்தான் விண்ணரசைப் பற்றி பேசவும் முடியும். அவர் ஒருவர்தான் இந்த அதிகாரத்தை மற்றவருக்கு வழங்கவும் முடியும். அந்த கால மரபுப்படி பார்க்கும் போது திறவு கோலைக் கொடுப்பது இடத்தின் மீதோ, அல்லது பொருள்கள் மீதோ, அல்லது நபர்கள் மீதோ உள்ள அதிகாரத்தை காட்டுகிறது. மற்றும் இறைவார்த்தையில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றவருக்கு இறைவார்த்தை அடங்கி உள்ள பெட்டியின் திறவு கோலைக் கொடுப்பதும் மரபாக இருந்தது. பெட்டியில் இருக்கும் வார்த்தைச் சுருளை அவிழ்க்கவும் கட்டவும் அதிகாரம் இருந்தது.
