GOSPEL READING: JOHN 2:1-11

“They have no wine.”
————————
In the Gospel of John, Mary appears for the first time at the wedding feast. She appears in Cana (not in her village or her house) in Galilee. And the first words uttered in this Gospel are: they have no wine. Mary is in someone else’s house and she is worried about their situation.

As Mary is found in the house of Elizabeth in the Gospel of Luke so here she is in Cana. There she went to be of help to Elizabeth. In Cana she might have come to one of her relatives house because she had been invited so too Jesus and his disciples. And her concern is for others. This is Mary.

19.01.2013 FELLOWSHIP

GOSPEL READING: MARK 2:13-17

“Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
——————————–
Jesus went to the house of Levi, on invitation, for a farewell –feast which Levi had arranged to his friends before he joined Jesus. Prophet Elisha made a similar meal before he left for his new mission (1Kg 19:21). Levi was cheerful because he got a new vocation (from Jesus) and he was grateful to God for that and hence this celebration was called for.

In Judaism fellowship at table had the special meaning of fellowship in the sight of God. Each person at the table ate a piece of broken bread and thus received a share in the blessing spoken by the master of the house over the whole loaf. Finally, every meal is a sign of the coming eschatological meal and the eschatological fellowship with God. Jesus offered this fellowship to all and especially to the marginalized.
