Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 16: 13-23

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus came into the world to reveal God and to establish the kingdom of God. He went about preaching the kingdom and doing the kingdom work (miracles). Jesus also was aware that the people were receiving him differently. Their perception was depending on their approach towards him: some approached him humanly (they wanted only food from him); others approached him as Jews (they saw him as prophets).

The real and the right knowledge come only through revelation from God. This is given only to a few. It is they who see him as the messiah. Even here one may go wrong if his thinking does agree with that of God. One can consider Jesus as a political messiah and not as the suffering messiah as Jesus wanted Peter to accept.

இயேசுவைப்பற்றி ஒருவன் அறிந்து கொள்ளவேண்டும் புரிந்துகொள்ளவேண்டும் என்றால் அது இறை வெளிப்பாடு வழியாகத்தான். இயேசுதான் மீட்பர் என்பதை கடவுள்தான் வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றார். இதையே மனித கண்ணோட்டத்தில் பார்த்தால் அதுவும் அரசியல் மீட்பராகத் தோன்றும். இறை வெளிப்பாடும் இறை கண்ணோட்டத்தில் பார்க்கும்போதுதான் இயேசுவைப்பற்றிய உண்மை அறிவு நமக்கு புலப்படும்.

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 15: 21-28

Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.”

Jesus was in a pagan territory. He could not expect many Israelites there except his disciples along with him. He did not go to proclaim the message of the kingdom there (it seemed so). We are not sure why the author presents this story in this way. The term ‘withdrew’ suggests that he wanted to be away from his regular place of activity.

He gave an opportunity to show that even among the pagans there were people of faith. Jesus showed that faith was essential for his ministry. Place was not important and the people of particular race or group was not important for Jesus to do his ministry. Jesus expected faith in God and that was sufficient for the people to be receivers of his favours.

இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, ‘அம்மா, உமது நம்பிக்கை பெரிது. நீர் விரும்பியவாறே உமக்கு நிகழட்டும்” என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார்.

இஸ்ராயேல் மக்கள் அதிகம் இல்லாத பகுதிகளுக்கு இயேசு செல்லுகிறார். இடங்கள், மக்கள் அவருடைய பணியை வெளிப்படுத்த முடியாது. நம்பிக்கை ஒன்றே அவருடைய பணிக்கு அடித்தளமாகும் என்று இப்புதுமை வழியாக இயேசு கூறுகிறார்.
