Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: MARK 10:28-31

Jesus demanded that his disciples should give up attachment to earthly things. The disciples have done it and Peter affirmed that in front of everyone. Jesus also affirms that those who give up things for sake of the gospel are rewarded. The reward is two folded: here on earth they receive a hundredfold with persecutions and second one is eternal life.

Eternal life is what man seeks after. The only way to achieve this is to give up everything. Giving up relationships and material attachment is the only way to achieving this. Hardships are also part of this. Eternal life is the reward for the life aimed at living for Jesus and the Gospel.

உலகு சார்ந்த நாட்டங்களை> உறவு சார்ந்த நாட்டங்களை சீடர்கள் விட்டுவிடவேண்டும். இதன் பயனாக அவர்கள் நிலைவாழ்வை பெறுவர். மனிதன் துவக்கத்திலிருந்தே நிலைவாழ்வை தேடி அலைகிறான். அது எளிதாக கிடைக்கும் ஒரு பொருள் அல்ல. மாறாக சீடர்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் விட்டுவிடுவதன் பயனாகவும் துன்பங்கள் மத்தியிலும் கிடைக்கும்.

GOSPEL READING: MARK 10:17-27

“Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone”. By saying this Jesus is proposing one of the basic attitudes that his disciple should possess. Jesus takes this from the famous prophetic verse Micah 6:8. Here the Israelite is asked to walk humbly before God. That is accepting God as the only Good and only God (creator) and realizing that he himself is only a creature before God. In fact the scholars say that this verse summarizes the whole of the Old Testament.

Jesus also tells him to dispossess himself of all the wealth and identify himself to the poor (give to the poor) and then to come and follow him. Possession of anything is a block to being a follower or disciple. Possession of wealth or things or anything for that matter distracts the mind of the follower. Dispossession (detachment) is a clear indication of Godly person, because he possesses only God.

கடவுள் ஒருவர் தான் நல்லவர் என்ற மனநிலையை சீடர்கள் கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும். எனவேதான் மீக்கா இறைவாக்கினர் 6:8ல் கூறுகிறார்: ஓ மானிடா> நல்லது எது என அவர் உனக்குக் காட்டியிருக்கின்றாரே! நேர்மையைக் கடைப்பிடித்தலையும்> இரக்கம் கொள்வதில் நாட்டத்தையும் உன் கடவுளுக்கு முன்பாக தாழ்ச்சியோடு நடந்து கொள்வதையும் தவிர வேறு எதை ஆண்டவர் உன்னிடம் கேட்கின்றார்? கடவுள் முன் தாழ்ச்சியோடு நடப்பதுதான் சிறந்தது. பொருள்கள்மேல் சார்பற்றநிலையே சீடத்துவத்திற்கு அடித்தளமானது.
