Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 20:19-23

Holy Spirit is a gift of Jesus to his disciples. Holy Spirit comes from Jesus and it is a free gift. This gift is given to the disciples only. And these disciples should have the resurrection experience to receive the Holy Spirit. (We should believe in the resurrection to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit). The disciples are asked to be in peace within themselves (peace be with you) and they are shown the wounds as the sign of his resurrection.

Jesus commissions the disciples to be like Jesus in the world as he was to them (As the Father sent me, so I send you). Only those who experienced the risen Lord and only after accepting the commission they are given the Holy Spirit. They are to pronounce in God’s name and by his spirit the message of forgiveness to all who believe in Jesus.

தூய ஆவியானவர் இயேசுவால் சீடர்களுக்கு கொடுக்கப்படுகிற ஒரு கொடை. இந்த கொடையை பெற சீடர்கள் உயிர்த்த இயேசு அனுபவம் பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும். இயேசு இவர்களை பணிக்கு அழைத்து தூய ஆவியை கொடுக்கிறார். இயேசுவில் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளும் அனைவருக்கும் கடவுளின் பெயரால் தூய ஆவியினால் மன்னிப்பு வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 21:20-25

Discipleship is personal and following of Jesus is not collective. This is the reason Jesus tells Peter, “What concern is it of yours? You follow me.” Jesus tells Peter not to be worried about the other followers and the way they would follow. Each disciple has his own way of following and bearing witness to Jesus. One might be asked to be martyr and the other may be asked to stay on and continue to bear witness through preaching etc.

Gospels are written to as testimonies to Jesus. The writers know the veracity of the writings and they are the only witnesses to it. Gospels do not need external verifications and testimonies to prove the genuineness of the writings. The gospels are not written to prove the historicity of the writings etc rather they are written as witnesses and communicate Jesus to the followers.
