Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 17:11-19

The disciples could be in the world with out the physical presence of the master. Jesus came into the world and trained them to be kingdom-workers and now he is leaving them in the world to continue the kingdom work and he is going back to the father. So he pleads the father to care for them and guide them because they are his representatives.

Jesus prays for them for unity. Kingdom is built on that. The two pillars of the kingdom are: unity and peace. Peace he leaves with them and the peace is his continued presence among them (where two are three are gathered together in my name I am in their midst). Unity is what makes their mission successful and which is the difficult one and hence Jesus prays for it. (Evil one is there to destroy this unity). Division is the scandal of Christianity.

இயேசு மீண்டும் தந்தையிடம் செல்வதற்குமுன் அமைதிக்காகவும் ஒற்றுமைக்காகவும் மன்றாடுகிறார். இவை இரண்டும்தான் இறையாட்சியின் தூண்கள். இயேசு சீடர்களோடு உடல்வடிவில் இல்லை என்றாலும் அவர் அவர்களோடு என்றும் இருக்கிறார். தந்தையிடம் செல்வது சீடர்களுக்காக ஜெபிப்பதற்காக.

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 17:1-11

This is the prayer of Jesus. It is said that the early church used this prayer as the prayer of the community. Certain aspects of prayer are presented here. Prayer is one of giving glory to the father and receiving eternal life as a gift from the father. Eternal life is nothing but knowing the father and the son. Prayer is also a moment of celebration because the mission is completed.

In prayer Jesus also prays for the disciples who are given to the by the father. These disciples are in the world but not of the world and hence they need care and protection. Jesus prays for the disciples because they have listened to Jesus and accepted Jesus and the words of Jesus about the father. Prayer of Jesus is for the unity of the disciples.

இந்த நற்செய்தி பகுதி இயேசுவின் செபத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது. துவக்க காலத்தில் திருச்சபையில் இந்த செபமே அதிகமாக ஜெபிக்கப்பட்டது என்று சொல்லுகிறார்கள். இங்கு செபத்தின் கூறுகள் காணப்படுகின்றன: அது ஒரு கொண்டாட்டம், அது இறைவனை மகிமை படுத்துகிறது, நிலைவாழ்வை இறைவனிடமிருந்து கொடையாக பெறுதல் (நிலைவாழ்வு என்பது தந்தையையும் மகனையும் அறிதல்), சீடர்கள் ஒன்றாய் இருக்கவேண்டும் அவர்கள் நன்றாய் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று ஜெபித்தல் போன்றவையாகும்.
