Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 15: 9-17

John is presenting Jesus as the one who is seeking the relationship of the disciples. The context of the last supper adds its colour to this situation. Jesus seems to be in deep need of their relationship and friendship. He has been with them for so long and he has no one else to go to. The only direction to which he can turn is to his father. He is sure of this relationship with the father.

Here he bases himself on this relationship with the father and he wants to build in the same way his relationship with his disciples. Jesus is trying to link his relationship with the father to that of his relationship with his disciples. The relationship should be that of friends: friendship with father; friendship with Jesus and among themselves.

இயேசு உறவுக்கு ஏங்குகிறவர்போல் சித்தரிக்கப்படுகிறார். சீடர்களிடம் உறவைப்பற்றி அதிகம் பேசுகிறார். உறவுக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டு தந்தை மகன் உறவே. அதேபோல் இயேசு – சீடர்கள் உறவு இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறார். தந்தை> மகன்> சீடர்கள் உறவு எல்லாம் ஒன்றாய் இருக்கவேண்டும் அதேபோல் ஒன்று மற்றொன்றை பிரதிபலிக்க வேண்டும்.

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 15: 18-21

Where does one belong to is the theme of this passage? One can belong to the world or one should belong to Jesus, or the one who sent him (father). If one belongs to the world then the world would love him and he would feel at home in the world. He would be one among the world.

But the disciples of Jesus do not belong to this world. They are in the world but not of the world. So for this reason they are hated by the world. (If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you).
