Breaking the Word

*GOSPEL READING:* JOHN 6:52-59

Jewish regulations forbade drinking blood (Lev 17:10-14). Here the meaning
is very clear and direct. But when you read 2Sam 23:17 where the phrase
drinking blood has a different meaning. King David wished to drink from the
well of Bethlehem. And Bethlehem was surrounded by army of the enemies.
When this wish of David was known to the three close friends and army men
of David they broke through the army and brought water to him. David
refused to drink and poured the water to the ground saying “Can I drink the
blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?”.

Deep meaning of what Jesus says is not that his followers will be cannibals
or they will be eating and drinking blood but rather the meaning is very
similar to what David has in the passage mentioned above. Jesus will put
his life at risk; in fact he will lose it and his followers will profit
from his death. They will ‘drink his blood’. This is not in the spiritual
sense but this should be understood in the physical sense as St. Paul would
say it in 1 Corinthians chapters 10 and 11.

பணயம் வைத்து குடிக்க தண்ணீர் கொண்டுவருகின்றனர். அவர்களின் இரத்தத்தை நான்
குடிப்பேனோ என்று தண்ணீரை கீழே ஊற்றிவிடுகின்றார். அவருடைய இரத்தத்தை
குடிப்பதென்பது அவருடைய இறப்பின் பயனை அடைவது.

GOSPEL  READING: JOHN 6: 30-35

 Jesus gives further explanation about the signs. People ask for signs and they agree that Manna given the ancestors was a sign from above. Here again the people are getting stuck with the signs only. Manna was not given by Moses but by father in heaven. We have also seen in chapter three of this Gospel the snake in the desert was only a sign but the power to heal was from the father.

 When we get stuck to the signs then we lose the real source of everything. God is the source of everything and it is he who gives power to the signs. Only what comes from the father has the power to give life. Jesus confirms that he comes from the father. Hence he is the Bread from Heaven.

 மக்கள் அடையாளங்கள் கேடகிறார்கள். பாலைநிலத்தில் அவர்களுக்கு மன்னா கிடைத்தது. மோசே வழியாக அவர்களுக்கு அடையாளங்கள் கிடைத்தன. அவர்கள் அடையாளங்களை நம்பினார்கள் மோசேயை நம்பினார்கள். இவைகள் அனைத்திற்கும் பின்னணியிலிருப்பது கடவுள் என்பதை மக்கள் மறந்தனர். கடவுள்தான் இயேசுவை அனுப்பினார். அந்த இயேசுதான் உயிருள்ள உணவு.
