Breaking the Word

GOSPEL  READING: JOHN 13:21-33, 36-38

 These last chapters of the gospel of John are really precious. They speak so much about comfort, challenge, hope, deep relationship of Jesus with his disciples and also strange relationship of Jesus with some difficult characters. On the one side there is John, the beloved disciple of Jesus, who could ask any question to Jesus and Jesus obliged him. On the other side there is Judas who being part of him looked for an opportunity to betray him. Jesus is flanked by love and betrayal.

Jesus is among his disciples who have learnt very little from him; understood much less; and grasped almost nothing. So Jesus gives them the simplest, clearest, but hardest of all commandments. Love one another (in the same way that I have loved you).  We love Peter because he is so much like the rest of us. Jesus is so gentle with him and loves him so much.

 யோவான் நற்செய்தியின் இறுதி அதிகாரங்கள் இயேசுவைப்பற்றியும் சீடர்களைப்பற்றியும் அவர்களிடையே உள்ள உறவைப்பற்றியும் அழகாக சித்தரிக்கின்றன. அன்புக்கும் காட்டிக்கொடுத்தலுக்கும் இடையே இயேசு அமர்ந்திருக்கிறார். இயேசுவின் போதனைகளை கற்றுக்கொள்ளாத, புரிந்துகொள்ளாத, ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாத சீடர்கள் மத்தியில் இயேசு அமர்ந்திருக்கிறார். இறுதியாக, மிக எளிதான, சிறிய, ஆனால் கடினமான கட்டளையை கொடுக்கிறார்.

GOSPEL  READING: JOHN 1:1-11

 In this scene one is compelled to see Mary in relation to all the others. Martha has served dinner for Jesus many times. This was another occasion. Mary had not helped her at all earlier. She had always chosen the better part. He says again that she has chosen the best. Her action is a prophetic action. Jesus was going to die and she has anointed him much in advance.

Mary and Judas are in logger heads. Judas appeared to be a man interested in serving the poor, out-going, sacrificing etc. But Mary was a spender in this scene; a waster; a person who has no concern for the poor etc. Jesus said leave her alone. Jesus found meaning in her action. Others found earthly meaning so they reacted. Jesus had a meaning which let her do what she wanted.

மரியாவுக்கும் மற்றவர்க்கும் உள்ள மனநிலை வேறுபாடுகளை காணமுடிகிறது. மார்த்தா உபசரிப்பதையே நோக்கமாக கொண்டு வாழ்கிறாள். யூதாசு பிறர்நலப் பணியை முன்வைப்பதுபோல நடிக்கிறான். இயேசு தனது பணியின் நிறைவையும் இறப்பையும் பற்றி பேசுகிறார். மரியா இயேசுவின் மனநிலையோடு சேர்ந்து சிந்திக்கிறாள்.
