Breaking the Word

GOSPEL  READING:  LUKE 11:14-23

People always ask for a sign. Even when they have witnessed many
miracles and seen many great events still they want a sign to satisfy
their curiosity. The request is only to satisfy their curiosity. They
want a sign at their request. Jesus also answers them in their own
language. He also challenges them about their own people’s activity.

Jesus makes a very important statement in this passage. “Whoever is
not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me
scatters”. Jesus presents this as the only one sign and a proof. Those
who belong to him and work with him will not ask for a sign. Being
with him is the sign that they belong to the kingdom.

கேட்கும் அடையாளம் அவர்களுடைய விருப்பங்களுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு அமையவேண்டும்
என்று விரும்புகிறார்கள். இயேசுவை சார்ந்திருப்பதே சிறந்த அடையாளம்.
இயேசுவோடு இருப்பவர்கள் இயேசுவை சார்ந்திருப்பவர்கள் அடையாளங்கள்
கேட்பதில்லை.

GOSPEL  READING: MATTHEW  5: 17-19

Jesus was seen in two different ways by two different groups of people. Jesus was starting a revolution; but he had to do two different things at the same time. First, he had to prove to the Jews that his movement was the fulfilment of all that Israel had believed. Second, he had to show to his followers that he was fulfilling what he was proclaiming as something new. The tension between these two remained all through.

Jesus held the tension of these two together as we see the rest of the Sermon on the Mount. (You have heard … but I tell you…). He also beautifully summarised the law and the prophets as: do to others what you want others to do. Jesus has fulfilled the law without breaking any of them but giving them a true, new and relevant meaning to the time in which he was living.

இயேசு சட்டங்களையும் ஒழுங்குகளையும் எதிர்க்கவோ உடைக்கவோ வரவில்லை.  மாறாக, புதுப்பொருள் கொடுக்கிறார்.  காலத்திற்கேற்ப பொருளும் விளக்கமும் கொடுத்தார்.  சட்டங்களையும்  ஒழுங்குகளையும் அவர்  மாற்றவில்லை  மாறாக புது விளக்கங்கள்  கொடுக்கிறார். “ஆகையால் பிறர்  உங்களுக்குச்  செய்ய  வேண்டும் என  விரும்புகிறவற்றை  எல்லாம்  நீங்களும்  அவர்களுக்குச்  செய்யுங்கள்.  இறைவாக்குகளும்  திருச்சட்டமும்  கூறுவது  இதுவே”.
