GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 28:8-15

‘His disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep.’
—————————————–
The primary concern was regarding the body of Jesus. There would not have been any problem if the body remained in the tomb. The disciples could have preached on resurrection (totally spiritual) in spite of the body being in the tomb. Resurrection was what Jesus was preaching and it was something to do with faith.

Here the disappearance of the body became a serious problem. They have to account to this disappearance. What could have taken place? Easy target to blame were the disciples because they were preaching on resurrection. (They might have hidden the body somewhere and continued their preaching). This was to discredit the disciples. If they had taken the body and hidden ti somewhere then they would have continued their reverence to the body quietly. Why did they not do ti? Something happened to the body. It was not there. He is risen.

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 20:1-9

Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.

Stone was removed from the entrance of the tomb. Body of Jesus was not there. Burial cloths were lying there. The cloth that had covered the head was not with the burial cloths but was separately rolled up in another place. These are the things that they saw.

Immediate reaction of Mary of Magdala was that they had stone the body from the tomb. She only saw the stoned rolled and the tomb empty. But the other disciples saw the cloths. This gave them the belief in the resurrection. If anyone had stolen the body then he would have taken the body with the cloths. But the person has disappeared leaving the cloths could only mean to the disciples that he is risen that is why the author says ‘he saw and believed’.
