Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: John 1:19-28

“Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet?”

A person needs certain qualification or identification to do certain job. All cannot do every job. One has to be commissioned to do a special job. General public do not take things for granted. They do verify and if need be they will also rectify the situation. Here those who came to verify the identity of John, were sent by people of authority.

They reply given by John was more than clear and he was very sure what he was. He openly admitted that he was not the one do to the job. He admitted that he was only a forerunner to the real one who was coming after him. This clarity of mind about oneself and his mission is the basic requirement. John has it to the full.

‘நீர் மெசியாவோ எலியாவோ வர வேண்டிய இறைவாக்கினரோ அல்லவென்றால் ஏன் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறீர்?”

ஒவ்வொருவருடைய வாழ்வுக்கும் பணிக்கும் தொடர்பு இருக்கவேண்டும். அதேபோல் ஒவ்வொருவருடைய அழைப்புக்கும் பணிக்கும் தொடர்பு இருக்கவேண்டும். தொடர்பு இல்லாதவர்கள் எதிர்மறையாளர்களாக வாழ்வார்கள். திருமுழுக்க யோவான் தன்னைப்பற்றி முழுமையாகவும் சரியாகவும் புரிந்திருந்தார். அவர் ஒரு முன்னோடி மட்டும்தான்.

GOSPEL READING: Luke 2:16-21

When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Naming of the child is important in the Jewish culture. The relatives and friends gathered around and made it a celebration. It was to bring the child into the community and in a sense it as to give recognition to the child among the family members. They would propose a name that would give the a link with the past that is their forefathers.

Here the name is revealed by the angel. The name was fixed even before the child was conceived. The name was from above and hence it revealed a character that was heavenly. The name revealed a divine mission. Since the child was from above it also had a divine mission.

குழந்தைக்கு விருத்தசேதனம் செய்ய வேண்டிய எட்டாம் நாள் வந்தது. தாயின் வயிற்றில் உருவாகு முன்பே வானதூதர் சொல்லியிருந்தவாறு அதற்கு இயேசு என்று பெயரிட்டார்கள்.

இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடையே பெயரிடுதல் ஒரு விழாவாக கொண்டாடப்பட்டது. நண்பர்கள் உறவினர்கள் எல்லாம் ஒன்றுகூடினர். அவர்கள் தேர்வு செய்கின்ற பெயர் குழந்தையை முன்னோர்களோடு இனைத்தது. இந்த குழந்தைக்கு கொடுக்கப்படுகின்ற பெயர் மேலிருந்து வெளிப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. முன்னோரோடு அல்ல மாறாக விண்ணோரோடு இனைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது இக்குழந்தை.
