Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 13: 1-15

God had put everything into his power. He had come from the Father and was returning to God. This statement shows the situation of Jesus: his position; his power; his role etc. It clearly showed that he was a God-man; he was a powerful man.

As God-man he had power over everything. He was the master of the situation. This Jesus put a towel around his waist; he became a slave; he washed the feet of the disciples. Jesus displayed a different type of God-man. He did not show his authority, power or status. This he did as an example for others to follow. This is a different type of being a master, leader, and teacher. The dialogue with Peter showed that Jesus gave importance to relationship, belonging.

இயேசு ஒரு இறைமனிதன். அவருக்கு எல்லாவற்றின் மேலும் அதிகாரம் இருந்தது. அவரே ஆண்டவரும் போதகரும். அவர் சீடர்களின் பாதங்களை கழுவுகிறார். ஆட்சி, அதிகாரம் செலுத்த வேண்டியவர் அடிமைபணி செய்கின்றார். இது ஒரு முன்அடையாளம். இதுவும் இறை-மனித உறவை வளர்க்கவே.

GOSPEL  READING: MATTHEW 26:14-25

 Today’s episode makes the disciple to choose between money and master. It was not that all the disciples decided the same one. He was just one among the twelve. He was a trusted man. When Jesus came out with the statement that one of them would betray him, nobody ever suspected Judas. Jesus had washed the feet of Judas as well. Dipping a piece of bread in the dish and passing to someone was a sign of special friendship.

 People celebrating the Passover reclined on couches as a symbol of freedom (free people reclined to eat; slaves sat or stood). This was the great picture of friendship and freedom (freedom to deny; to betray; to run away etc). The environment, the ambient, the situation, the surrounding, the atmosphere, the setting, the location and all speak of friendship and freedom. (When we are strong then we are weak).

இரவு உணவின்போது அவர்கள் அமர்ந்திருப்பது நட்பின் உச்சநிலையை, சுதந்தரத்தின் உச்சநிலையை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது. உணவு பரிமாற்றம் மட்டுமல்ல உறவு பரிமாற்றமும் நடக்கிறது. உணவும் உறவும் வாழ்வுக்கு இன்றியமையாதவை. உறவு, அன்பு, சுதந்தரம் போன்றவைகள் இறைவன் சார்ந்த பண்புகள். உணவுப்பரிமாற்றம் இந்த பண்புகளை வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன. ஆனால் பணமா – உறவா?… பணமா – அன்பா?… பணமா – சுதந்தரமா?…
