Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 3:1-6

The word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert.

Biblical God works in history and through historical persons and God is referred to in relation to historical person. God’s action is definite and real because God acts in historical, sociological and religious contexts. It is not addressed in a vacuum rather it is addressed to a historical person and he becomes the transmitter of the word of God to the others.

John son of Zechariah was made use by God to do this work of communicating the word of God to the people. God makes use of human persons to communicate himself to the world. This communication is to reveal the salvation of God to people and it is a call for repentance. Divine gifts are through human means.

அக்காலத்தில் செக்கரியாவின் மகன் யோவான் பாலைநிலத்தில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார். அவர் கடவுளின் வாக்கைப் பெற்றார்.

விவிலிய கடவுள் வரலாற்றின் கடவுள்; வரலாற்றில் கடவுள். வரலாறு படைக்கும் கடவுள். ஏல்லாரோடும் தொடர்புகொள்ள தனி மனிதனை அவர் பயன்படுத்துகிறார். செக்கரியாவின் மகன் யோவான் வழியாக மீட்பைப் பற்றியும் மீட்பை பெற (‘பாவமன்னிப்பு அடைய மனம்மாறித் திருமுழுக்குப் பெறுங்கள்”) மனமாற்றத்தின் அவசியத்தையும் வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார்.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 1:26-38

For nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Mary was a virgin but she was betrothed to a man named Joseph. She was a historical person with sociological background and controlled by geographical and temporal limits. Such a person was encountered by an eternal, limitless, beyond space and time God. At this juncture she could only utter ‘I am the handmaid of the Lord’.

Mary believed in a God who created the heavens and the earth. She believed in a God who redeemed her ancestors from slavery. She believed in a God who walked along with her forefathers through the thick and thin of the history. She believed in a God who controlled the nature and history. Nothing was impossible for this God. When such a God addressed her she could only say ‘I am the handmaid of the Lord’.

ஏனெனில், கடவுளால் இயலாதது ஒன்றுமில்லை” என்றார். பின்னர் மரியா, ‘நான் ஆண்டவரின் அடிமை@ உம்சொற்படியே எனக்கு நிகழட்டும்” என்றார்.

மரியா படைப்பின் கடவுளை நம்பினாள். தனது முன்னோரை அடிமைத்தனத்திலிருந்து மீட்ட கடவுளை நம்பினாள். தனது முன்னோரோடு வரலாறு படைத்த கடவுளை நம்பினாள். இயற்கையிலும் வரலாற்றிலும் தன்னை வெளிப்படுத்திய கடவுளை நம்பினாள். கடவுளால் இயலாதது ஒன்றுமில்லை என்று நம்பினாள். இந்த கடவுளை எதிர்கொள்ளும்போது, ‘நான் ஆண்டவரின் அடிமை@ உம்சொற்படியே எனக்கு நிகழட்டும்” என்று மட்டும்தான் சொல்ல முடிந்தது.
