Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 16:5-11

Jesus’ going away from this world has brought grief to the disciples. This is the natural happening. He himself has said “I will strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered”. But his going away is not the end. Natural way of thinking is to believe that the end is at hand. But Jesus never thinks that way nor does he teach his disciples to think that way.

He thinks and teaches a new way. He teaches the disciples to think in the resurrection perspective (to think creatively, to think positively etc). He says: But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. His going is not a lose but a gain. Yes the Holy Spirit will be given to the disciples.

இயேசு இவ்வுலகை விட்டு செல்வதை குறித்து சீடர்கள் துயரத்தில் மூழ்கியுள்ளார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களிடம் சொல்லுகின்ற உண்மை இதுவே: நான் போவதால் நீங்கள் பயனடைவீர்கள். இயேசு இவ்வுலகைவிட்டுச் செல்லுதல் அவர்களுக்கு நன்மை பயக்ககூடியது. அவர் செல்வதால் துணையாளர் வருவார் என்பதும் அது அவர்களுக்கு நன்மைபயக்கும் என்பதும் ஒரு புதிய சிந்தனை.

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 15: 9-17

Sayings of Jesus in this passage are quite interesting. He says: I love you; I have told you this; I have called you friends; I chose you; I appointed you etc. All these words (verbs) speak of relationship. All what Jesus has done with and for disciples are for building up relationship with them. He was not interested in anything else than to build them as his friends and build friendship among them.

This friendship and the rest of it were to bear fruit: fruit if fidelity (It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain). The friendship that Jesus was trying to build among his friends was to remain forever. It was not for a particular period of time or duration.
