GOSPEL READING: JOHN 6:16-21
The lake is about twelve miles long and by seven miles wide at its widest point. The disciples had rowed through the whole distance and there was also a storm. This event is recorded by both Mark and Matthew. All the three of them record it after feeding the multitude.
The author is keeping the exodus event in his mind when he writes these events. Jesus has fed the five thousand as God had fed the Israelites in the desert. God also made the Israelites walk through the red sea on dry ground. Here Jesus walked on the water and reached the shore as the disciples reached Capernaum. Israelites believed that God does such mighty acts at the key moment of their history (at the exodus then and now in and through Jesus).
