GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 23: 23-26
You pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and fidelity.

In this chapter, in verses 13-33 there are eight woes leveled directly against the Scribes and Pharisees. Probably there are in opposition to the eight beatitudes. The followers are identified with or merited with beatitudes and Scribes and Pharisees are cursed with woes.
The Scribes and Pharisees observed smaller duties but omitted greater ones. The smaller duties were paying tithes and paying the taxes for even small things like mint etc. They boasted of this (Lk 18:12). Paying tithes was their duty, and what the law required; Christ tells them they ought not to leave it undone. (withholding tithes is called robbing God, Mal. 2:8-10). But Christ condemned them for omitting the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith.
