GOSPEL READING: MARK 2:23-28
The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

The Pharisees were arguing using the scriptures and the traditions. Scriptures forbade them from doing any creative work. Because God rested on the seventh day from doing the work of creation. Here the disciples were making food; creating something new for their food.
Jesus also argues back using the scriptures and the exception made by King David. Sabbath rule has exceptions according to Jesus. The exception is based on the basic principle: man is not for the Sabbath but the Sabbath is for man. Ritual observances must give way to moral obligations; and that may be done in a case of necessity, which otherwise may not be done.

ஓய்வுநாள் புனிதமானது அது கடவுளால் நிருவப்பட்டது. அது மனிதனுக்காக உருவாக்கப்பட்டது; சுமத்தப்பட்டது அல்ல. ஓய்வுநாளை உருவாக்குவதற்கு முன்பாகவே மனிதனை கடவுள் படைத்துவிட்டார். ஆனால் மனிதனை கடவுளுக்காக படைத்தார் (ஓய்வுநாளுக்காக அல்ல). மனிதனைப் படைத்தது: கடவுளோடு அன்புறவு கொள்ள; அவரைப் புகழ; அவருக்கு நன்றி செலுத்த.
