12.10.2013 HEAR THE WORD

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 11:27-28

“Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”

Upon hearing an excellent discourse by Jesus a woman in the crowd made an honest and a well-meaning applause. This was in contrast to the statements of scribes and Pharisees. Her exclamation showed that she wanted to be a mother of such a person. This is found in the song of Mary (Lk 1:48): All generations shall call me blessed.

Jesus did not deny what this woman said, nor refused her respect to him and his mother; but he led her from this to that which was of higher consideration: rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. Though it is a great privilege to hear the word of God, yet those only are truly blessed, that is, blessed of the Lord, that hear it and keep it, that keep it in memory, and keeps to it as their way and rule.
