29.04.2014 LIFTED UP

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 3:7-15

Just as Moses lifted up the brass serpent, so also the Son of Man should be lifted up. Brass is bright (Christ feet was shining like brass Rev 1:15); it is durable; and it had no poison. Jesus was also bright shining in front of all creation; his redemption was durable for all eternity; and he had no sin in him (though he was in the form of a sinful man). The serpent was a cursed animal so also Jesus was made a curse.

Christ was lifted up in crucifixion. His death was called as being lifted up. He was lifted up as a spectacle, as a mark, lifted up between heaven and earth as if he was unworthy of both heaven and earth and abandoned by both. He was also lifted up in his exaltation. He was lifted up to the cross to be further lifted up to the crown to the right hand of the Father. Thus he might save his followers and bring them safe to the Promised Land.
