GOSPEL READING: LUKE 6:1-5

Jesus justifies his disciples in a work of necessity for themselves on that day. It is said that the Jews are forbidden to do any creative work on the Sabbath. It was because the Lord rested from the work of creation. So they were forbidden to create anything new. Here the disciples were making (creating in a sense) food for themselves.

They were in the corn field. Was it within the walking distance of the Sabbath day? But Jesus argument was from the action of David. David was the beloved of the God and hence he should have been more observant with regard to the rules. Here Jesus pleads the case for his disciples and he does not behave like a judge. Ceremonial appointments may be dispensed with, in cases of necessity.
