GOSPEL READING: LUKE 2:33-35
Luke is presenting Jesus as a leader: a leader of suffering, a sign of contradiction. Mary would watch this in dismay (and you yourself a sword will pierce), as her son being rejected by the very city to which he promised peace; and being rejected by the very same people.
The kingdom brought by this child is not for Israel only, but for the whole world. This is the truth at the heart of the Old Testament. God has a plan of salvation for the whole world and for all the people without distinction. This will be the true glory of Israel itself, to have been the bearer of promise: promise of salvation to all.
