GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 2:13-18
The author of the gospel of Matthew is trying to present Jesus as a new Israel. He is depicting Jesus as an individual going through all the experiences of the people of Israel. The descendants of Abraham became a nation or formed themselves to be a nation in Egypt. They were there as slaves or as foreigners in a strange land. Jesus also goes through that Experience.
Later Jesus goes through forty days of desert experience to re-live those forty years of the people of Israel. Baptism of Jesus also makes him realize that he is the son of God. Adding everything together Jesus becomes a new Israel. (in a sense having the experience of Egypt, desert experience and the experience of God as the Father etc.)
