06.01.11 JESUS AND THE WORD OF GOD

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.  He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord." Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?"  (Lk 4:14-22)

Jesus was regular for Sabbath prayer in the synagogue (according to his custom). Besides, he was also, probably, regular in reading the scriptures and commending on it. He was appreciated by all for his preaching. (He taught in their synagogue and was praised by all). He did not start his preaching ministry only after his Baptism. He had been doing this even before beginning his public ministry.

He preached on the word of God and he founded (based) his life on the word of God. Word of God gave him the goal of his life and word of God was the motivating and guiding principle of his life. (Man does not live on bread alone but from every word that comes forth form the mouth of God). Word of God was life for Jesus. He read the word of God; he preached on it; he lived by it for he was the word.

Word of God was not some theoretical, philosophical ideas for Jesus. Word of God put him right in the midst of people. The people among whom he continued his ministry were: poor, captives, blind, and oppressed. These were the people who suffered political, social and physical ailments. He was among the suffering people.
