St. Matthew, Apostle, Saturday – 21st September 2019 — Gospel: Mt 9,9-13
Responded to a new life
Jesus encounters Matthew, who is working at a tax collecting station in Capernaum. In the Roman system the job of tax collector was awarded to the highest bidder. The collector would sometimes try to collect extra taxes from the people to increase his personal profit. For this reason, the tax collectors were despised as corrupt and dishonest collaborators with the Roman Empire. Patriots considered them as traitors and even beggars refused to receive offerings from them. Yet Jesus did not condemn them but chose one of them, Matthew, as one of his apostles. Jesus goes out against the expectations of the faithful lawyers to share his love with the neglected and to heal them. Like the call of the first disciples in their fishing boats, Matthew’s calling also was compelling and direct. It was Matthew’s awareness of his condition that enabled him to respond without hesitation. It is the call to leave behind whatever was his idol and to pursue a new path and in a new way.
கப்பர்நகூமில் சுங்கவரி வசூலிக்கும் நிலையத்தில் பணிபுரிந்த மத்தேயுவை இயேசு சந்திக்கிறார். உரோமானிய முறையில் வரி வசூலிக்கும் பணியை அதிக விலைக்கு ஏலம் எடுத்தவருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டது. வரி வசூலிப்பவர் சில நேரங்களில் தனது தனிப்பட்ட இலாபத்தை அதிகரிக்க மக்களிடமிருந்து கூடுதல் வரிகளை வசூலிக்க முயற்சிப்பார். இந்த காரணத்திற்காக, வரி வசூலிப்பவர்களை உரோமை அரசுடன் இணைத்து, ஊழல் நிறைந்த மற்றும் நேர்மையற்ற ஒத்துழைப்பாளர்களாக வெறுத்தனர். தேசபக்தர்கள் அவர்களை துரோகிகள் என்று கருதினர். கையேந்துபவர்கள் கூட அவர்களிடமிருந்து எதையும் பெற மறுத்தனர். ஆயினும் இயேசு அவர்களை புறக்கணிக்கவில்லை, அவர்களில் ஒருவரான மத்தேயுவை தமது சீடர்களில் ஒருவராகத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார். ஒதுக்கப்பட்டவர்களுடன் தனது அன்பைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளவும் அவர்களை குணப்படுத்தவும் சட்ட அறிஞர்களின் எதிர்பார்ப்புகளுக்கு எதிராக இயேசு செயல்படுகிறார். மீன் பிடிக்கும் படகுகளில் வேலை செய்து கொண்டிருந்த சீடர்களை முதன் முதலில் அழைத்தது போன்று, மத்தேயுவின் அழைப்பும் கட்டாயமானதாகவும் நேரடியானதாகவும் அமைந்திருந்தது. தனது சமுதாய நிலை குறித்த விழிப்புணர்வுதான் மத்தேயுவை தயக்கமின்றி இயேசுவுக்கு பதிலளிக்க உதவியது. அவருடைய உருவ வழிபாடு எதுவாக இருந்தாலும் அதனை விட்டுவிட்டு புதிய பாதையில் புதிய வழியை பின்பற்றுவதற்கான அழைப்பு இது.
