28.09.2020 — Kingdom’s Inclusive Ministers

26th Week in Ord. Time, Monday – 28th September 2020 — Gospel: Lk 9,46-50

Kingdom’s Inclusive Ministers

Before moving towards Jerusalem, Jesus’ final lesson on discipleship comes in the second part of today’s Gospel (9,49-50). Once again we get a glimpse of the humanity of the disciples, as they are still in training. The disciples manifest their lack of understanding with regard to Jesus’ ministry. John tells Jesus that they tried to prevent someone ministering in his name because he was not from their own inner circle. But Jesus invites them to rejoice with others, if they are truly doing the work of the Lord, rather than complain that others are “not of our company.” There is no place for jealousy and rivalry among those who wish to serve the kingdom. Jesus calls them to cooperation and collaboration, for many co-workers are needed for the work to be done. We need to trust in the Lord who can work also in and through others, while they may not be fully united with us. Jesus teaches us not to be so quick to judge others’ motives, instead give them the benefit of doubt and wait to see what their work produces. For he has said, “by their fruits you will know them.” (Mt 7,16).
