30.09.2020 — Pursuing the Highest Priority

26th Week in Ord. Time, Wednesday – 30th September 2020 — Gospel:    Lk 9,57-62

Pursuing the Highest Priority

In the Gospel, a few individuals declare their desire to follow Jesus. But Jesus challenges them and demands a complete and immediate response without any excuses. The third possible disciple states that he will follow Jesus, but first desires to bid farewell to his family. The request parallels Elisha’s response when Elijah calls him to follow. Elisha kisses his mother and father before following the prophet (1 Kgs 19,19-21). Jesus’ reply suggests that disciples must have the urgency and commitment of Elisha, who not only bid farewell to his parents but also offered up his oxen in sacrifice, using the wood of his plough for fuel. Using the metaphor of the plough, Jesus teaches not to look back. Like a farmer who must plough with eyes directly ahead so that he ploughs a straight furrow, the disciple must always give his attention to God’s call. Following Jesus is a solemn commitment to follow one whom the world does not embrace. It means breaking with the ways of one’s past and often breaking old ties, but keeping the kingdom of God as the highest priority. Walking in the path of Jesus involves one’s whole life. The path is not easy, but discipleship means looking ahead with singular dedication to the work of the kingdom.
