The Guardian Angels, Friday – 2nd October 2020 — Gospel: Mt 18,1-5.10

Personal Protection through Angels

The idea that every person has a guardian angel enjoys a long tradition in the Church. In the Gospel, placing a young child in the midst of his disciples, Jesus tells them to be careful as to how they treat children for they have angels in heaven who are in touch with God. Jesus shows not only His own love and care for children but also the concern His Father has for them. His words underscores one of the most important truths of our faith: God exercises a special love and concern over each one of us.  He also tells the disciples not to focus on the wrong thing, about who is the greatest but simply to have faith of a child. Further, he reminds them not to hurt the children because their angels are in the presence of God and they are protected not only by Jesus and his Father, but also by their angels. This is fulfilled in the words of the psalmist, “God will command his angels to guard you in all your ways.” (Ps 91,11). Jesus has emphasized this aspect in his saying, “Not one sparrow is forgotten by God… So do not be afraid; You are worth much more than many sparrows” (Lk 12,6-7).
