1st Week of Advent, Friday – 4th December 2020 — Gospel: Mt 9:27-31
Faith as Measure of Mercy
The faith of these two blind men is worthy of notice. The phrase “according to your faith” does not mean ‘in proportion to your faith’ (quantity of faith) but rather ‘since you believe, your request is granted” (possessing quality faith). Here again Matthew emphasizes the proper faith that men should have in Jesus, in order that blessings may come to men through that faith. The expression “according to your faith” is a rule of the kingdom to receive many blessings and a measure to our own mercies. The two blind men had the faith to follow Jesus forsaking other paths, other directions, because they decided solely to follow him. They had the faith to cry out, which means willing to put words to their desire. They both had the faith to make some noise, and were not afraid of embarrassment. They had the faith to identity Jesus as the Son of God, recognizing him as the Messiah. They had the faith to ask Jesus for mercy, knowing they didn’t deserve healing. They had the faith to believe in the request of Jesus to heal them. Finally, in firm faith they said to Jesus, “Yes, Lord.”
