18.01.2021 — Cultivate an Attitude of Joy

2nd Week in Ord. Time, Monday – 18th January 2021 — Gospel: Mark 2,18-22

Cultivate an Attitude of Joy

Jesus had no problem with the value of fasting. In fact, he began his ministry with forty days of fasting in the desert. In answering the religious leaders about fasting Jesus wishes to highlight an attitude he expected of his followers. He reminds them of the happiest days in the life of any Jew, namely, the seven days of a wedding feast. No one should fast that week. The guests are expected to enjoy themselves. Therefore, Jesus implies that those who fast should not deny themselves enjoyment of food. They should know that fasting is a means to an end, namely, should lead to inner peace and joy. In comparison, Jesus says that being with him is like being at a wedding. In communion with him, they should acquire the habit of joy which fasting is supposed to bring about. Fasting purifies the person from gloomy behaviour and attitudes and then releases joy that lies within each one’s heart.  So fasting will be a means of uniting with Jesus, the cause of our joy. They should acquire a habit of joy, i.e., struggle to get in touch with Jesus.
