3rd Week in Ord. Time, Friday – 29th January 2021 — Gospel: Mark 4,26-34
Birds in the Mustard Bush
Jesus speaks about the tiny mustard seed which blossoms into a bush which provides food and also protection for birds. The birds do nest under shade and feast on the seeds of the mustard bush. The reference to the birds has two interpretations. Some say the birds are those in the world who find their shelter in the kingdom. The kingdom had a small beginning, but it is now growing into a movement. Many in the world have found help and safety under its branches. This picture refers back to the Old Testament prophecy in which birds that nest in trees represent representatives of different nations who find protection in powerful leaders. In Eze 31,2-6 the leader is Pharaoh; in Dan 4,20-22 it is Nebuchadnezzar; while in Eze 17,22-24 it is God. In rabbinic usage, birds signify the Gentiles (non-Jews). Others says the birds are the children of evil one. In the parable of the sower and soils, the birds stood for Satan, who snatches the seed (Mk 4,15). It means that the growth of the kingdom will not result in the conversion of the world. Some of the growth will give opportunity for Satan to get in and work.
