St. Mathias, Apostle, Friday – 14th May 2021 — Gospel: Jn 15,9-17
Privilege with Responsibility
Jesus reminds us that the choice of being His disciple and apostle does not depend on each one of us. Rather, it is purely a gratuitous gift from the Lord. It is Jesus who has first chosen each of us for this privilege and responsibility. The starting point of this process is from God, namely God’s gift and God’s election. This is what raises the chosen ones from the role of slave to that of servant-friend. The response of the one chosen is to be faithful to his calling which God has bestowed on us through Christ. God’s call not only begins and ends with Him, but also invites us to have a deeper relationship with Him. Once we accept this special relationship, we are given the privilege of learning from the Master and keeping His commandments. In this bonding relationship, we are asked to undertake His mission – to love others as Jesus has loved us and continue to love us. This is the great responsibility that is entrusted to all His chosen ones.
