St. Thomas, the Apostle, Friday – 3rd July 2021 — Gospel: Jn 20,24-29
Divinity not Denied
Thomas is to be blamed for his unbelieving attitude. He wishes to have visible, tangible proof of the Lord’s resurrection. The risen Jesus dealt gently and patiently with his faithless follower. It is an encouragement to know that He had a personal interest in and concern for “doubting Thomas”. After Jesus’ personal manifestation, Thomas was convinced. Whether he did put his hand into the Lord’s side, we do not know. But he did acknowledge the divinity he did not see by the wounds he did see. He recognized the risen Jesus as both Lord and God. In this encounter, the most important thing is that Jesus accepted Thomas’ worship as God. If He were only a man, He should have refused it. But Thomas’ faith was not the kind that was most pleasing to the Lord. It was a belief based on sight. Yet, Jesus openly accepted Thomas’ worship by not refusing.
