2nd week in Easter, Friday – 29th April 2022 — Gospel: John 6, 1-15
No Waste
What began as, “What good are these for so many?” became, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” When there was not enough money to feed everyone (Jn 6,7), and all they could borrow was barely enough to feed one boy (Jn 6,9), Jesus miraculously provides not just a solution, but an abundance, more than what was needed to solve the problem (Jn 6,13). Indeed, Jesus ordered the disciples to collect the leftovers, so that nothing will be wasted. He could have certainly made exactly what was required. Then why were there leftovers? The superabundance of leftover is a witness to the affluence of the giver. The command from Jesus, not to “waste”, calls for the reality that no gift be lost. This sacred economy of Jesus is in harmony with and illustrative of the ways of the Creator with his universe. In fact, Jesus urges us not to “waste” the superabundant graces we receive through the Eucharist.
