Challenges in the Kingdom
The gospel today presents a situation in which one has to choose between one’s family and faith. We need to be loyal to God primarily than our thickest blood relationships. Jesus also teaches his disciples that the message of God’s kingdom is confrontational. Conflicting responses to that kingdom can splinter the closest human bonds. Disciples must be willing to subordinate their allegiance to what they love best, i.e., even their own family, for the sake of Jesus and his mission. Jesus’ purpose is not to create division, but his coming has inevitably incited conflicting responses. In essence, discipleship means to take up the cross and follow Jesus, which is the way to true and everlasting life.
