Instructions for Worthy Living
In the first reading, Paul urges Timothy to be faithful to the teachings given to him and not to be overcome with a desire for riches. He warns him against those who do not follow the “sound” teachings of Jesus. They have a weakness for questioning everything and love to argue about words. They do absolutely nothing to help the cause of Christ and the building of the kingdom. The result of this kind of behaviour is jealousy, incessant arguing, verbal abuse and a deep sense of mistrust. In a similar manner, Paul is aware that worldly possessions can divert even the most fervent disciple from staying on the faith-filled track. Those who hanker after material wealth are a prey to all kinds of problems. They get trapped into all sorts of foolish and harmful ambitions, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. Instead of being so concerned with the ways of the world and indulging in foolish teachings, the true disciple and leader should focus on being content with what one has, being concerned for others, and to commit oneself to “eternal life” for which everyone is called to.
