Sharers in Jesus’ mission
When Jesus sent his disciples on a mission, he gave some instructions that will support them to fulfill their mission. It was realistic, for he tells them to take only the simplest of clothing and travel needs. In effect, their lack of provisions demands that they place their complete trust and confidence in the providence of God for their every need. They must also depend on the generosity of people who receive their message. The command to take nothing was designed to create an environment of need, where faith was required and obedience was tested. However, this dependence should not be limited to words alone, but needs to be expressed in actions. Thus, those who follow Jesus share in his power and authority over evil and sin. The disciples are called then to heal, to exorcise, and to proclaim God’s kingdom. In this way, they carry out God’s plan and collaborate in Jesus’ mission of salvation.
