Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 9:14-15

Fasting and was one of the mail religious practices of the Jewish religion. It was a sign of their belonging to the religion and their adherence to the religion. Pharisees fasted twice a week (Lk 18:12). This was supposed to remind the Pharisees of the destruction of the temple. Fasting was to a certain extend remind the the negative side of their life (sin, destruction etc)

Jesus replied them saying that the bridegroom is with the disciples and hence there was no need for them to fast. Presence of the bridegroom is a moment for celebration. This is so in any culture and every culture. There is no culture that mourns the wedding feast of the presence of the bridegroom. Fasting in itself has no value; it relevance is only in relation to something or some event or someone.

நோன்பு இருத்தல் ஒரு நிகழ்வோடு அல்லது ஒரு நபரோடு தொடர்புள்ளது. பரிசேயர்கள் கூட வாரத்திற்கு இரண்டுமுறை நோன்பிருந்தார்கள் (லூக் 18:12). அதுவும் எருசலேம் கோவில் இடிபட்டதற்கு வருந்துவதற்காக. மணமகன் சீடர்களுடன் இருப்பது மகிழ்வான நிகழ்வு. அங்கே வருத்தத்திற்கும் நோன்பிற்க்கும் நேரமில்லை. நோன்விற்கும் பொருள் கொடுப்பது மணமகனே.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 9:22-25

Jesus speaks of suffering, rejection, being killed, and taking up the cross. All these seem to make one feel unhappy about being the disciple. At the end, all these are the signs or steps to follow Jesus. Suffering is personal though causes may be from outside. Rejection is from others and they are noticeable. Death is the end in human terms.

But the world of today speaks of alleviating suffering. It speaks of including everyone and speaks of equality, fraternity and solidarity. Every effort is made to postpone death because no one can escape it. This way of living a life (save ones life) is finally a waste. The life that Jesus speaks of is a life with a purpose, a life with God, a life for God and that is the real gain of oneself.

இயேசு துன்பப்படுதலையும்> உதறித் தள்ளப்படுதலையும்> கொலைசெய்யப்படுதலையும்> சிலுவையையும் பற்றிப் பேசுகிறார். ஆனால் இன்றைய உலகம் துன்பத்தை அகற்றுதலிலும்> சமத்துவ சகோதர வாழ்வையும்> உலகு சார்ந்த நீடிய வாழ்வையும் பற்றி போதிக்கிறது. உண்மையைக்கூறின் இயேசுவும் வாழ்வைப்பற்றித்தான் பேசுகிறார். வhழ்வு என்பது இயேசுவுக்கு இறைசார்ந்தது> இறைவனுக்காக> ஒரு நோக்கத்துக்காக. அதுதான் தனிமனித வாழ்வின் பயன்.
