29.03.2014 PARABLE

Posted under Reflections on March 23rd, 2014 by

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 18:9-14

This parable is addressed to those who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised the others. The Pharisees were proud of themselves and their goodness. They thought themselves as holy as they needed to be and in fact holier than all their neighbours. They had confidence in themselves before God and they depended upon the merit of their own righteousness.

They thought that they had made God their debtor and they might demand anything from him. They also despised others and looked upon them with contempt as not worthy to be compared with them. These two men went up to pray and it was not the hour of public prayer. It was the time of their personal devotion. This parable revealed their attitude to God, the other and prayer.

28.03.2014 CLARIFICATION

GOSPEL READING: MARK 12: 28-34

Jesus has been answering well. He clarifies all the doubts of the Sadducees, Scribes and Pharisees. He also challenged their wrong understanding and their wrong practices. They were also presenting a wrong image of God because of their wrong understanding and wrong practice.

Here a Scribe is questioning Jesus on the basics of one’s religion. Jesus as usual answered rightly. He answered it from the Scriptures itself. Jesus based himself; his life, his mission, and his teaching on the word of God. That is the reason that he is the kingdom and the Scribe who answered well is also near to the kingdom and he will be part of the kingdom if his life in turn becomes a living witness of the word of God.
