Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 20:1-8

And he saw and believed.

There are four persons in this short passage. Out of four three are named: Mary of Magdala, Peter and Jesus. The fourth person in this narrative, who is the main person in this short story, goes unnamed. His identity is revealed through his quality or the quality of his relationship with Jesus. This is the best name one could have: a name that reveals the relationship with Jesus.

This beloved disciple holds important places in this Gospel. To him many things are revealed by Jesus and he himself proves a lot of things correct in relating to Jesus. Here he does so by believing him. He belied in Jesus at the beginning, he belied in him at the miracle at Cana. Here he believed in the resurrection. Belief is a continuous and an ongoing process.

இயேசு தனி அன்பு கொண்டிருந்த மற்றச் சீடர் என்பது அந்த சீடருக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட பெயர். இது அவருடைய குணத்தை, அவர் இயேசுவோடு கொண்டிருந்த உறவை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது. இதுவே சரியான பெயர். அவர் இயேசுமேல் கொண்டுள்ள நம்பிக்கை ஒரு தொடர் நிகழ்வாக இருக்கிறது. துவக்கமுதல் இறுதிவரை தொடர்ந்து நம்பிக்கையை ஒவ்வொரு வெளிப்பாட்டிலும் காண்பிப்பதுதான், இயேசு தனி அன்பு கொண்டிருந்த மற்றச் சீடரின் சிறப்புப் பண்பு.

Followers are Jesus not alone. Visibly they may stand alone in front of governors and kings. They may stand alone in the court and in the synagogues. They will be challenged and questioned by leaders and even by not believers. Yet they are not alone. The presence of Jesus and the presence of the triune God is with them.

Christian religion is a revealed religion. God revealed himself through the word in the Old Testament and in the New Testament he revealed himself in Jesus. But one of the greatest and highest and the fullest revelation is the presence of God among his followers. He speaks through them; he walks with them; and he suffers with them.
